Discover newfound confidence in your knitting abilities as you understand how to best use variegated yarns, unlocking the door to your stash and turning every skein into a masterpiece.

Students will learn the basics of hand-dyed yarns, the terminology of variegated yarns, learn about a large variety of stitch patterns and ideas that work well with variegated yarns, and the important things to consider when choosing knitting patterns that will best highlight the beautiful colors in their skeins of yarn.

What you leave with: one or two swatches and a handout to take home for further reference.

Prerequisites

Basic knitting skills (cast on, bind off, knit, purl)

What is provided (for the duration of the workshop)
  • Thread
  • needle
  • cardstock
  • pins
What to bring
  • At least 50 grams of variegated yarn in a skein (Optional)
  • Variegated yarn in a ball - ready to knit (enough for TWO good-sized swatches)
  • A complementary color of yarn in the same yarn weight (enough for a good-sized swatch)
  • Knitting needles appropriate for the yarn
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

Tonia Lyons

Tonia Lyons is a TKGA certified knitting instructor, Master Hand Knitter, and knitwear designer based in Quebec, Canada. She enjoys teaching knitters how to really understand their knitting with the goal of helping them become more confident about tackling new projects or techniques. Her work has been featured in Cast On, Interweave, and Knit Now, as well as other publications. She loves to chat all about knitting on her YouTube channel, Nerdy Knitting, and her website.
