In this workshop you will discover the full range of possibilities opened up by improvisation in quilting. You will explore the improvisation process: its challenges as well as its many benefits. You will learn tools to foster creativity in your work, the use of reclaimed fabrics (upcycling), and techniques for improvised curved piecing. You will practice assembling curves and take part in improvisation exercises.

What you leave with: Technical knowledge on improvisational assembly, as well as the results of the exercises and practice completed by the participant during the workshop. *No finished product will be produced during this workshop.

Prerequisites

Know how to use a sewing machine.

What is provided (for the duration of the workshop)

Iron and ironing board.

What to bring

Sewing machine, sewing thread, sewing pins, sewing scissors, rotary cutter with blade, cutting mat, seam ripper, and IMPORTANT: bring an assortment of woven fabrics (non-stretch) in various colors (scraps welcome, reused fabrics welcome) chosen by the participant. Optional: iron and ironing surface.

Émilie Trahan

Émilie Trahan is a Quebec textile artist whose practice focuses on improvisational quilting and the upcycling of everyday materials such as sheets, pillowcases, tablecloths, and clothing, reconnecting with the origins of quilting. Through this work, she explores the relationship between memory, material, and the intangible world beyond sensory perception, expressing it through an abstract visual language of organic forms and intersecting curves, with quilts conceived as poetic compositions that sketch the fibers of the universe. Her work has been exhibited and published in Canada and the United States and has received numerous awards, and she also works as a palliative care physician at Joliette hospital.
