Marie-José Gustave

Marie-José Gustave, an artist of French Caribbean heritage (Guadeloupe), was born in France and has been living in Quebec since 1998. It is in France that Marie-José graduated with a master’s degree in apparel production. Since then, fibre—especially paper fibres—have always fascinated her. Their flexibility and rigidity make them the best material to bring into existence volumes and textures.
A self-taught artist, her work is based on experimenting with materials and combining different craft techniques—basketry, knitting, crocheting, etc.
Marie-José’s creations are influenced by her heritage and inspired by the various cultures she has experienced. With paper yarn and cardboard, she shapes sculptural as well as functional artworks.
Marie-José is a professional member of the Quebec and Ontario crafts councils as well as of the International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists. Her work has been exhibited in Montreal, Toronto, Cambridge, New York, Slovakia and Germany.
